Open textbooks
I just came across this Open Textbook site on Slashdot. This is clearly a direction I will have to consider given my political views on open source (fledgling as they are). It also suggests the possibility of truly open source textbooks. I suppose this could be done via a wiki with chapter headings on the side. The egocentric model of academic endeavor really has to undergo some change. There is most definitely a place for individual understandings, arguments, and polemics, but it would seem that an open text book on, say, planning history or economic development could be produced that summarizes and integrates different points of view.
Ahhh…another project for post-dissertation days…unless someone wants to get started soon.
