No canal in Korea
Lee Myung-bak (2MB) has abandoned his plans to build a canal system across South Korea (a peninsula the size of Indiana), reports the Chosun Daily. It means abandoning a source of domestic stimulation for the economy and the struggling construction sector, but it also means preserving the environment and saving billions of dollars in tax payer contributions.
“In the current circumstances, I think it is impossible to pursue the grand canal project,” said Kwon Jin-bong, director-general of the ministry’s Water Resources Bureau.
“Current circumstances”, of course, indicates President Lee’s 22% approval rating and ongoing, vociferous protests against US beef imports. Korea’s democracy may be confused (they just voted Lee in because of his promises to build the canal and improve relations with the US), but at least it’s vibrant. The US (citizenry) has much to learn.
